Access for certain vehicle types may be restricted on select roads of Georgia’s capital city on workdays to alleviate traffic jams, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said on Wednesday.
Kaladze said access could be restricted to M3, N2 and N3 category vehicles, and noted his office's initiative to limit large vehicles from public roads between 8am-11am and 5pm-8pm from select road sections of specific areas.
He also said the City Hall would be in "close cooperation" with the business sector, including construction companies, in order to “take everyone’s interest into account”.
He said the initiative would come into force in 2024 and only after reaching agreement on the issue with businesses.
Naming traffic jams as one of the most important problems of the city, Kaladze said there would be a "need for more comfortable public transport" in the city and that “everything should be done” for the public to be less dependent on private vehicles.
