Thea Tsulukiani, the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia, on Wednesday pledged the Georgian Government would “do everything to ensure there is no shooting and there is peace and stability” in the country.
Her remarks at the Georgian Parliament followed calls for a rally in Tbilisi later during the day by two opposition parties, after a controversy around a United States-sanctioned former Prosecutor General of Georgia and a National Bank of Georgia decree exempting the country’s nationals from sanctions without domestic court rulings.
Tsulukiani claimed “the [opposition’s] struggle and efforts to disrupt the situation have already begun” and added the authorities would make efforts against the alleged plans.
“We are doing our best to continue as we have been doing, but there are people in our system who are being identified as tools in this fight”, Tsulukiani told MPs.
She also claimed the opposition United National Movement party was attempting to “return to power with the same methods to [then] torture us”.
