Parliament officials highlight PACE resolution recognising Georgia’s progress

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday highlighted the latest resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe by saying “everyone [except] a part of our opposition” could see the progress mentioned in the document.

In his remarks over the matter, Papuashvili noted the matters related to the European Union’s conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status that were “dependent on the Parliamentary majority” had been implemented.

“Everyone sees the progress - unlike a part of our opposition, unfortunately. Everyone sees that there is progress and many of the recommendations have already been implemented. But at the same time, the participation of all parties [in the work on the conditions] is important, especially in those matters that concern the adoption of decisions that the Parliamentary majority cannot make alone”, Papuashvili said.

In his turn, Gia Volski, a ruling party MP and the Vice Speaker of the Parliament, noted the resolution emphasised the progress made by the country’s authorities as “striking”, adding the document supported their work in the area.

“The resolution highlights the responsibility of all political parties in terms of achieving more and being more active”, Volski said.

The PACE resolution on Friday welcomed the progress made by Georgia in honouring its obligations and commitments taken up as part of its membership in the body.
