UK tightens transit flight rules for Georgia, over 100 other states

The United Kingdom has tightened transit flight rules for citizens of Georgia and over 100 other states with a requirement to obtain a Direct Airside Transit Visa, the Georgian foreign office said on Wednesday.
The visa category, in effect since September 8, is required when a person travels to a third country while switching flights in the UK without going through border control, the Ministry noted.
The changes will also concern Ukraine, Moldova, Turkey, North Macedonia, South Africa, China, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Montenegro, Bosnia and a number of other states, the body added.
Terms of operation of airline companies between Georgia and the United Kingdom, from tariffs to flight frequency and safety regulations, were agreed in a deal signed between authorities of the two countries on Friday.
Strategic partnership between Georgia and the United Kingdom and “intensive” bilateral and multilateral cooperation involving the sides were discussed on Thursday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and his British counterpart James Cleverly.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday discussed “strategic partnership” and “dynamically developing relations” with the United Kingdom while hosting Sir Philip Robert Barton, the Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK.
The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will meet Georgian officials and civil society groups during his official visit to the country on Thursday and Friday, the Georgian foreign service said.
