Georgia’s EU Ambassador hails Borrell visit as “very important”, notes “big message”

Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, Georgia's Ambassador to the European Union, on Thursday hailed the upcoming visit of Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative, to the country as “very important” and a “big message”.

In his remarks over the visit, Makharoblishvili noted the European official’s meetings would focus on the Georgian Government’s efforts for European Union integration, as well as geopolitics, regional matters and the current security situation in the country.

His visit is very important and a big message. [...] During the meetings, we will talk about [EU’s] enlargement, Georgia’s candidate status, we will talk about the implementation of the 12 priorities [set out by the European Commission for the status], in general, about ongoing reforms in our country”, Makharoblishvili said.

Borrell will be on the visit between Thursday and Friday to discuss progress on the country’s European integration path and exchange views on wider foreign policy and regional matters. In the framework of the visit, he will meet the Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili.
