Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday highlighted the Middle Corridor - a logistics route linking Europe and Asia via the South Caucasus - as “extremely important” for “East and West”.
In his remarks on the route on the backdrop of a new partnership launched between Georgia and China during the visit of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to the latter country, Volski noted Georgia enjoyed an “important geopolitical position” in terms of the development of a new Silk Road connection.
The importance of the Middle Corridor has been talked about for a long time, but today this topic is extremely important for everyone - both for East and West - and the connection of these two markets cannot happen without the Middle Corridor. Georgia's geopolitical position corresponds to the standard necessary for the development of the historical Silk Road, and a lot of things will happen through Georgia”, Volski said.
The Parliament official also said a “large part of the architecture of the future world” would be formed while taking “interests of Georgia” into account.
At this stage, activities of the Prime Minister are important and necessary, and should be welcomed by everyone. It is unfortunate that many destructive individuals have appeared who are open to [the idea of directing] criticism even on these issues”, he continued.
Garibashvili and his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang on Monday reviewed Georgia’s transit potential and the importance of the development of the Corridor, which they said had gained “even more weight in the light of current challenges in the world".
Garibashvili on Tuesday highlighted that the Middle Corridor was advancing at “an impressive pace” at a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart Alikhan Smailov.
