Trade, economic and investment cooperation between Georgia and the United Kingdom was discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between Georgia’s Deputy Economy Minister Irakli Nadareishvili and Malcolm Offord, the UK Minister for Exports.

Georgia’s Economy Ministry cited Nadareishvili as saying it was “critical” to advance private sector cooperation to a “new level” to strengthen the commercial and economic ties between the two countries.

He also noted the governments of the two countries were setting up “significant platforms” to increase the representation of British businesses in Georgia and vice-versa.

The Ministry also said the officials discussed cooperation in tourism, with its “growing dynamics”, and added introduction of direct flights between the countries would further contribute to the trend.

The sides also discussed the situation created in the Black Sea region on the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the UK side highlighting the “great potential” of the Middle Corridor logistics route between Central Asia and Europe. The officials also pointed out the Black Sea submarine electricity cable project, intended to connect the grids of the South Caucasus and European Union member states.

The meeting noted the UK was an “important strategic political and economic partner” of Georgia, while also highlighting the existing frameworks of cooperation such as the UK-Georgia Wardrop Strategic Dialogue, in the eighth round of which the parties agreed on the future plans of bilateral relations. Launched in 2014, the format covers a wide range of areas of cooperation, including foreign, security, and defence policy, as well as economy and trade.

The Georgian official also mentioned the Tbilisi Silk Road Forum would be held in capital Tbilisi between October 26-27 to review “factors defining regional and global trade and connectivity”, and pointed out the UK would be represented at the Forum at a “high level”.
