A section of the Black Sea coastline in western Georgia’s port city of Poti will be restored in a $3.78mln effort to address its years-long washing out by the sea, the Poti City Hall announced on Wednesday.
The municipal body said the section, which follows the coastline for the area known among local residents as “The Island”, would be restored this year.
The important challenge in Poti over the recent decades, which has caused the washing out of the shore and claiming of the coastline by the sea, is being solved", Mayor Beka Vacharadze said in a social media post announcing the initiative.
A tender for the project has been announced by the Roads Department of Georgia, with the works expected to be completed within eight months after formalities with a contractor are completed.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday said while Central Asian countries agreed on the need to diversify and develop new routes, a “special attention” was paid to the transport corridor involving Georgia, in his highlighting of the importance of port, railway and other infrastructure for realising the country’s role of a regional hub.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday discussed the potential of the country’s Black Sea Port of Poti and the increased interest in the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor with officials from APM Terminals, the managing company of the port.
The New Poti Seaport, an investment project into Georgia's largest Black Sea harbour, will employ approximately 200 people, Tamar Ioseliani, the Head of the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency has said. Ioseliani highlighted the new construction project at the seaport was an "extremely important" initiative that would increase the capacity of port infrastructure in the country.
A section of coastline and roadways in several of Georgia’s Black Sea towns will be soon corrected and restored.
