Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker Archil Talakvadze on Tuesday said the decision by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to ask the Georgian Ambassador to leave Ukraine within 48 hours for consultations in Georgia concerning the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili did “not serve Georgia-Ukraine friendship” but added it “cannot cast a shadow on Georgia's support for the Ukrainian people and Ukraine”.
In his remarks over the matter, Talakvadze noted the Ambassador in Ukraine and the staff of the Embassy had been “continuously working” since the beginning of the war in the country.
“Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision does not serve the friendship between Georgia and Ukraine and I would say it is not fair, although it cannot cast a shadow on, cannot weaken Georgia's support for the Ukrainian people and Ukraine”, he said.
As long as there is a war in Ukraine and Russia's aggression, we are not going to assess these steps, and we are not going to enter into any dispute [or] make political statements regarding Ukraine”, the Parliament official added.
“The Georgian Ambassador and the Georgian Embassy in Ukraine are the person and the diplomatic mission that did not leave Ukraine in the most difficult days, including when hostilities were taking place in and near Kyiv”, Talakvadze noted.
Zelenskyy on Monday called on the Georgian authorities to hand over Saakashvili to Ukraine for the “necessary treatment and care” and instructed the Ukrainian foreign office to summon the Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine, to “express our strong protest” and to ask him to leave Ukraine within 48 hours to hold consultations with his capital.
