Archil Talakvadze, the Georgian Parliament's Vice Speaker, on Wednesday said the Government would do “everything” to ensure that the European Union has" full basis” to grant the country it's membership candidate status later this year.

In his remarks over the matter, Talakvadze alleged the “radical” opposition and several non-governmental organisations had a "common goal of damaging" the country’s positions in its European integration.

In the interim assessment of the European Union, one can see that in the Associated Trio countries [Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine], Georgia has implemented the most recommendations. This means that we have tangible progress in the implementation of the rest of the recommendations, and by the end of the year the Government will do everything to ensure that the European Union has full basis to grant the country a candidate status when making a political decision”, Talakvadze said.

“Several [domestic] NGOs are in unison with the radical opposition and we know their common goal. They want to damage Georgia's positions in terms of European integration. They need this in order to somehow weaken the confidence towards the Government and damage its reputation. They need it for the [2024 Parliamentary] elections, because they are not the leaders of the future. They do not know what to offer to the public”, the Parliament official claimed.
