Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Tuesday hailed Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s comments at a panel discussion of the ongoing Global Security Forum in Bratislava and said the country obtaining the European Union membership candidate status later this year would end polarisation on the domestic political scene.

In his comments following the PM’s address at the Forum panel earlier on Tuesday, Darchiashvili reiterated the bloc’s positive decision on Georgia’s candidacy would be a “very strong step” against the country’s divided political environment.

Describing the Forum as a “distinguished platform” dealing with European security issues, the FM said the head of the Government had had an opportunity to speak about “all challenges” his country faced with partners.

Georgia’s number one foreign priority now is to obtain EU membership candidate status. We always tell our partners that ending domestic polarisation requires efforts by all parties and not actions by our opponents to damage the country [on its EU] path”, Darchiashvili said in reference to the domestic opposition.

He also noted the head of the Government had raised the topic of his country’s security and its enforcement at the event, which he said was another “important priority” for the country’s authorities.
