Peter Stano, the Spokesperson for the External Affairs of the European Union, on Thursday encouraged the Georgian Government to align with the bloc and other countries in their airline sector sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Stano’s call came after Vladimir Putin’s announcement on Wednesday of resumption of direct flights from Russia to Georgia and lifting of visa requirements for Georgian citizens.

In his remarks over the matter, the EU Spokesperson noted the bloc and a number of other countries had sanctioned Russian airlines and were not allowing flights from, to or over Russia.

The EU encourages Georgia, aspiring to become an EU candidate country, to align with the EU and other countries in their sanctions against Russia also in the aviation sector, and to remain vigilant regarding any possible attempt to circumvent them”, the EU official said.

Stano also cited “significant” safety concerns notified to Russia by the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organisation and said Georgia should “not allow unsafe Russian aircraft into its territory”.

Due to EU sanctions, 95 percent of the Russian airplane fleet is not able to update and upgrade their airplanes, which is essential to maintain the necessary international technical and safety standards”, he pointed out.

Earlier today Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said Russian aircraft sanctioned by the international community following the country’s invasion of Ukraine would not be allowed to enter Georgian airspace.

Georgian Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili on Thursday responded to the Russian Government lifting its ban on flights with Georgia and visa requirements for citizens of the country by saying it was a “unilateral decision” by Russia, and pledged continued observance of sanctions placed by the international country on the latter for its invasion of Ukraine.
