Rustavi City Hall hosts exhibition of 92-year-old artist in Tbilisi

The City Hall of Rustavi on Thursday hosted an exhibition of works by Giorgi Chaladze, a 92-year-old artist, sculptor and educator recognised for his work in the domestic artistic institutions, in the country’s capital Tbilisi.

Hosted at Tbilisi City Assembly, the event’s audience featured Rustavi Mayor Nino Latsabidze, officials from Tbilisi city authorities and the Parliament and personalities from the domestic culture field.

Latsabidze told the audience at the event organisers wanted to present Chaladze’s art to a wider audience and thanked the artist for his “merits and impressive creative activities” over the years.

The 92-year-old creative is a graduate of the Faculty of Sculpture at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and a founder of the Rustavi Art School and the Union of Artists in the city.

Working in practices fusing sculpture and painting, Chaladze’s work has been summarised to represent a “synthesis of form, volume and colour”.

The artist’s works have been displayed in exhibitions at Tbilisi’s Museum of Fine Arts and the Karvasla Gallery in the capital, in addition to displays in Germany, Sweden and Greece. He has also produced set designs for a production at the Thessaloniki theatre.

Chaladze has been awarded the title of the Honorary Citizen of Rustavi, Meritorious Artist of Georgia and the Medal of Georgian-Ukrainian Friendship for his portrait of poet Taras Shevchenko.
