The ruling Georgian Dream party MPs have denied the rumours of the possible restoration of Russian-language departments at Georgian schools.
MP Tamar Taliashvili, the Deputy Chair of the Education Committee, said the speculation on restoring the Russian-language departments at Georgian schools and higher education institutions was a “lie, disinformation and purposeful provocation.”
It serves to worsen certain negative attitudes among the society, which is totally unacceptable and immoral,” she added.
Education Committee Chair Giorgi Amilakhvari blamed the opposition United National Movement for spreading the rumours, saying the Committee had never discussed the restoration of Russian-language departments at educational institutions.
A total of 38 children affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine have been enrolled in Georgian schools, Tamar Makharashvili, the Georgian Deputy Minister of Education, said on Friday.
Makharashvili noted the Ukrainian students would be able to join Georgian schools in a “simplified procedure,” meaning they would still be accepted without the documentation.
Primary school students affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine will be enrolled in Georgian public and private schools in a simplified manner, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia announced on Friday.
In-person studies have resumed in the remaining big cities of Georgia - in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Rustavi starting today.
UNICEF Georgia welcomes the Georgian government’s plan to gradually open schools in the cities and the villages of Georgia. An official statement of the organisation reads that safe re-opening of schools and preschools must be prioritised during lifting the restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
