Georgia is celebrating International Women’s Day, a national holiday in the country, on Tuesday. The occasion commemorates the women’s rights movement and is associated with the idea of emancipation of women and their struggle for social, political, economic and labour rights.

The day used to be mainly celebrated by states of the Socialist bloc until its adoption in 1975 - the International Year of Women - by the United Nations. First celebrated in the United States on February 28, 1909, in 1910 International Women's Day was established in Copenhagen at the International Conference of Socialist Women at the initiative of German feminist, socialist and Communist leader Clara Zetkin.
