Georgia is celebrating Mother’s Day on March 3, celebrating mothers and mothers-to-be all over the country.

At this annual celebration children usually give their mothers flowers, congratulatory cards and various other symbolic presents.

Promoting respect for women and appreciating their role in the family, as well as their enduring efforts in the upbringing of children, are seen as the principal ideas behind the date.

Various countries worldwide celebrate Mother’s Day on different days, with most marking the occasion on the second Sunday of May.

The celebration of Mother’s Day in Georgia was established in 1991 following a suggestion by the country’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, approved by the Supreme Council of Georgia.

Georgia was the second country to celebrate Mother’s Day worldwide after Norway.
