Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, Georgia's representative to the European Union, on Tuesday said the visit of Oliver Varhelyi, the EU commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, to the country would focus on the “new opportunities” the “new reality” had brought to Georgia.
Makharoblishvili noted Tuesday’s visit of Varhelyi would focus on the EU conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status.
According to the June decision [of granting Georgia the European perspective], the European Union moved Georgia to the enlargement tier - therefore, the visit of the European commissioner to Georgia is of special importance in terms of enlargement”, he said.
“Of course, within the framework of the visit, we will talk about the new opportunities that this new reality has brought to Georgia”, Makharoblishvili added.
On June 24, the European Council granted the membership candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and said it would be ready to grant the same status to Georgia once the outstanding priorities outlined by the European Commission would be addressed by the Georgian government.
