Anniken Huitfeldt, the foreign minister of Norway, on Monday said Georgia had taken “important steps” in terms of democratisation and good governance, and expressed her desire to see the process continue.
In her remarks made as part of her visit to Georgia, the top Norwegian diplomat confirmed her country’s “unwavering support” for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
Over the years, Georgia has taken important steps in terms of democratisation, human rights and good governance. We want to see the continuation of the process and to highly appreciate that the recommendations issued by the European Union in June will be implemented”, she said.
“Although we are not a member of the European Union, we have a very close partnership with the European Union. Our relations are based on common values and principles”, Huitfeldt added.
The minister also stressed Russia’s ongoing occupation of the Georgian regions of Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia violated international law.

"Borderisation and detention policies by Russia make the lives of the local population even more difficult. This is completely unacceptable and condemnable”, the FM pointed out.
We welcome Georgia's efforts in the direction of dialogue. Also, we welcome the involvement of the European Union and the United Nations in the Geneva international discussions. We once again call on Russia to comply with the 2008 ceasefire agreement”, Huitfeldt concluded.
