Philip Reeker, the United States Senior Advisor for Caucasus Negotiations, and Tea Akhvlediani, Georgia’s State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, on Tuesday discussed the humanitarian, human rights and security situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).

Violations of fundamental rights of the local population in the occupied regions were in the focus of the meeting, with the parties stressing the importance of the Geneva International Discussions, the only international format on issues of the conflict in Georgia.

The State Minister emphasised the “important role” of the US in the process of a peaceful resolution of the conflict, including by promoting restoration of trust between communities divided by war and supporting the conflict-affected population along the administrative line separating the occupied regions from the rest of the country.

The Georgian state body said Akhvlediani had also thanked Reeker for the “strong support” of the US for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders, as well as for the country’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration process.

On his part, Reeker once again confirmed the “unwavering support” of the US for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
