Guram Macharashvili, a member of the Parliamentary majority, on Thursday said he was leaving the ruling Georgian Dream party and would join three MPs who exited the team last month following a disagreement over the public relations strategy with the rest of the faction.
In his statement Macharashvili explained the reasons for his decisions by saying he had no “political incompatibility” with the Georgian Dream party and was leaving the ruling team to provide more information to the public.
Quite complex political processes are taking place in the world. Therefore, Georgia cannot be an exception. […] I once again got convinced that providing the necessary information to the public is correct, because the fundamental principle of democracy is that the public knows about political processes”, Macharashvili said.
He stressed that the membership in the Georgian Dream party faction could be an “obstacle” to providing the necessary information to the public.
Sozar Subari, Mikheil Kavelashvili and Dimitri Khundadze left the ranks of the ruling Georgian Dream party on June 28.
They said they had decided to set aside party affiliation in a bid to inform the public about behind-the-scenes dealings of the domestic opposition that they claimed were aimed at causing “unrest and war” in the country.
