Batumi lifeguards awarded for bravery after professionals save 40 holidaygoers over a month

Lifeguards working in Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi were on Saturday awarded for their bravery after saving holidaygoers and providing first aid to them throughout the past month while on duty on the coastline.

The Georgian Emergency Management Service awarded the lifeguards for “exceptional bravery and merit”, with Lasha Tvauri, the Deputy Head of the Firefighting and Rescue Department, handing commemorative presents to Zaza Bukia, Irakli Goguadze and Irakli Tsintsadze - professionals from western regions of Adjara, Guria and Samegrelo.

Malkhaz Abesadze, the Head of the Water Rescue Team of Tbilisi, also received a special award, the Service said, adding each of the rescuers had “performed several difficult rescue operations at risk of their own lives in the last month”.

Georgian lifeguards have saved 40 individuals from drowning and provided first aid to 14 over a one-month period.

The Emergency Management Service has also urged the public to obey instructions of rescuers during the holiday season and follow safety rules.
