Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday hailed the “triumphant victory” of the country’s national rugby team over Italy on Sunday, after the result in a test game marked the first-ever win by the Lelos against a Tier 1 side.

The Prime Minister thanked the team for their “heroism and victory” and noted the “pride” of citizens of the country in the squad following their defeat of the Italian counterparts in Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi.

Garibashvili also highlighted recent wins of Georgia’s football and basketball teams, noting the former’s leading of their UEFA Nations League group last month and the latter’s defeat of the current world champion Spain in a qualifying match for the World Cup earlier this month.

Georgia’s national rugby team on Sunday defeated Italy in a test game, recording the “historic” first win over a Tier 1 squad with the final score 28:19.
