Former Georgian Economy Minister elected central bank board member

Natia Turnava, the former Georgian Economy Minister, has been elected to the Board of the National Bank of Georgia following a vote in the Parliament, the country’s legislative body announced on Tuesday. 

With 80 votes in favour and nine against her candidacy, Turnava has been elected as a board member for a term of seven years. She was nominated by Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili.

During a hearing at the Parliament on Monday, the former Minister said the Board of the Bank needed to become “more effective” and had to “take more responsibility” for the stability of macroeconomic, monetary and financial sectors in the country.

Composed of nine members, the Board has members elected to all but one position following Turnava’s election.

Holding the post of the Economy Minister between April 2019 and February 2022, Turnava was replaced by Levan Davitashvili, who used to serve as the country’s Agriculture Minister.
