Georgia marks 77th anniversary of World War II victory over fascism

Georgia is today celebrating the 77th anniversary of the victory over the Nazi Germany by allied forces in World War II.

On the occasion of the annual May 9 celebrations, the Ministry of Health and Tbilisi City Hall will provide one-time financial assistance to World War II veterans and family members of deceased servicemembers.

The former will receive ₾1,000 ($328/€310), and the latter will be presented with ₾500 ($164/€155), the Government Administration said.

The Social Service Agency of the Ministry of Health will provide the assistance, while those registered for residence in the capital city will receive it from the Tbilisi City Hall.

Up to 700,000 Georgians served as part of the Soviet armed forces in WWII and nearly 400,000 died, according to the numbers released by the State Service of Veterans Affairs of Georgia. Of the servicemembers, 224,000 received various awards for their service, while 164 were granted the highest honour of receiving the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union.

As of 2019, there were 492 WWII veterans in Georgia, 155 of them with disabilities.
