Two arrested for assault of police officer, failure to report crime

Police arrested two individuals for assaulting a police officer and failure to report the crime earlier today on Shuamta Street in the Varketili district of the capital of Tbilisi, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

Arrested following the incident that took place on the Tbilisi-Senaki-Leselidze highway on April 15, the offence involved three individuals.

Police said one of the two detained persons, a 25-year-old charged with assaulting a police officer, had “intentionally crashed” their vehicle into a police car of David Mikiashvili, the Head of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Main Division of the law enforcement, causing injury to the latter.

The other arrested individual, aged 31, was charged with a failure to report the incident, as all three persons fled the scene after the incident and two of them were only arrested today in Tbilisi, while the third individual involved in the offence was detained on May 5 in the western Georgian town of Zugdidi. Both were charged with the failure to report the crime.
