The Georgian Government is launching large-scale infrastructure projects in the country under about a ₾2.5 billion ($817mln/€757mln) initiative, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on Monday.
Set to run between three to four years, the move will see the Government offer ₾2 billion ($653mln/€605mln) in projects to construction companies in the country, and provide them state-guaranteed commissions to attract finances.
Garibashvili pointed out the projects would be implemented ahead of time, adding the initiative would help the economy, support business and create 20,000 new jobs.
Garibashvili announced the project would involve 800 schools, with 80 new schools to be built in addition to renovation of others. The new constructions will come under a total budget of about ₾1 billion ($326mln/€302mln). Additionally, 90 kindergartens will be constructed and 412 renovated across the country.
The Government head also said a 1,000-flat ‘Police Town’ would be built on Jikia Street in the capital of Tbilisi, in the district that houses a special police base. The PM said the base would be relocated and replaced by a new building.
Additionally, renovation of all police offices and bases is planned within the programme with a cost of about ₾350 million ($114mln/€105mln).
It is also planned to renovate the bases of the Special Tasks Department and bring them to a single standard. Work will begin at the Border Police - we will build new sectors, renovate existing ones everywhere and bring all bases and buildings to a single European, modern standard,” Garibashvili said.
The Government will also begin renovation of all theatres across Georgia and build new sports complexes in all municipalities of the country, the PM added.
The Ministry of Economy will have a new building in Tbilisi's Ortachala district, while the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be renovated.
