About two million tonnes of oil and other oil products of Kazakh origin will pass through Georgia’s oil terminal in the coastal town of Batumi in 2022-23, Guram Guramishvili, the Deputy Economy Minister, announced on Thursday.

“Active negotiations” are underway with Kazakhstan on the transportation of the additional volumes of oil and oil products through the Georgian corridor, the official also noted.

Guramishvili pointed out the “competitiveness” of the Georgian corridor, saying statistics of cargo transported by international rail were characterised by growth dynamics despite the global pandemic.

He also said Georgian Railways were “actively working” to attract dry cargo in the middle corridor as well.

Kairbek Uskenbayev, the Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, announced earlier this week export and transit cargos from Kazakhstan would be redirected to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route crossing Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
