The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office has requested Germany extradite former head of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces under the United National Movement government General Gigi (Giorgi) Kalandadze to Georgia, as he is charged with illegal deprivation of liberty and torture, which allegedly took place in 2012.

Kalandadze, who has been wanted by Georgian law enforcement agencies since 2015, was arrested at Berlin airport earlier today.

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor's Office says that Kalandadze, along with several other former officials under the previous state leadership, kidnapped an individual and tortured him to make him admit to staging a terrorist act.

Imprisoned former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili says that Kalandadze ‘bravely fought against Russians’ during the Russia-Georgia 2008 war, and that his arrest is in Russian interests.

Kalandadze’s arrest is a shame,” Saakashvili said, who was also arrested in Tbilisi on October 1 after eight years in political exile.

He also says that like him, Kalandadze is a citizen of Ukraine and holds an official post in the country.
