Georgia takes up Black Sea group chairmanship for six months

Albania has handed over the six-month rotating chairmanship of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) group to Georgia, effective today.
The Georgian Chairmanship-in-Office got underway during the 43rd Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the organisation held online on June 30, 2021.
At the meeting Georgian Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani thanked Albania for its work during its chairmanship in the BSEC and confirmed Georgia's readiness for fruitful cooperation with member states over the next six months.
Zalkaliani posted on his Twitter account that 'we are to spare no efforts' to eradicate challenges that remain in the organisation and further develop the economy 'for the benefit of our region'.

The BSEC, which unites Georgia, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Moldova, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine, was established in 1992.

Georgia as the Council of Europe (CoE) chair country has called for the renewal of the organization’s laws on human rights and environmental protection to make sanctions and obligations clearer and stronger against environmental and organised crimes.
Starting today until May 15, 2020 Georgia will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE), a decision making body composed of the ministers of foreign affairs of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe or their permanent representatives in Strasbourg.Georgia has taken over the chairmanship from France.

Authorities meeting in Austria announced Georgia’s Constitutional Court will chair the Conference of European Constitutional Courts for the next three years.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has met with her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Paris today. During their meeting the two presidents pledged to deepen the political and economic ties between their countries, as well as the role of the European Union in the Black Sea region.
