De facto President of Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region Aslan Bzhania is visiting Syria.
He is scheduled to meet with Russian-backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad later today.
Syria recognised the ‘independence of Abkhazia’ back in 2018, while a so-called Abkhaz embassy was opened in Damascus last year.
The Georgian government suspended diplomatic relations with Syria in 2018.
Russia recognised the Georgian regions of Tskhinvali and Abkhazia as independent states in the wake of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
Only Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria have taken the same step of recognition so far.
The rest of the international community says that the regions are occupied by Russia and urge the country to withdraw its troops from Georgian territory.
The de facto government of Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region has dismissed reports on the alleged visit of a de facto Abkhaz official to Tbilisi-controlled territory for negotiations on trade and economic issues.
The winner of the de facto presidential elections in Georgia’s Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, says that Georgia and the Abkhaz need a bilateral format of talks to settle ‘everyday or transborder issues.’
Fifteen countries have reacted to the ‘presidential elections’ in Georgia’s Russian occupied region of Abkhazia and said they ‘do not recognise the legitimacy’ of the so-called ‘presidential elections’.
Aslan Bzhania has been sworn in as the fifth de-facto leader of Russian-occupied Abkhazia for a five-year term on April 23.
