2,270 victims of domestic violence identified in first quarter of 2021 in Georgia

Police identified 2,270 victims of domestic violence and 2,141 abusers in the first quarter of 2021 throughout Georgia, reports the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia (MIA).
The MIA reports that out of 2,270 victims of violence 1,875 (83%) were women.
As for abusers, 1,818 were men and 323 were women.
The statistics of the first quarter of 2021 shows that 84 per cent of the victims of domestic violence were older than 25.
As for violence against children and adolescents, 5.7% of the victims of violence were under the age of 17 in the first quarter of 2021.

Tbilisi City Court has set 100,000 GEL bail for the world acclaimed Georgian tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili, who has been charged with violence against his ex-wife in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.However, his lawyer Irma Tchkadua said Basilashvili denies the charges against him.
A law drafted by the Georgian Interior Ministry has come into force today which makes the punishment for certain forms of domestic violence more severe. The law also reads that should a restraining order be violated, an individual will face criminal charges.
Abusing a family member will become punishable by two years in prison instead of the current one year.The punishment will be more severe if the act of violence is committed in the presence of a minor.
Georgia's internationally renowned theatre director Robert Sturua has come under criticism after comparing alleged revelations of domestic abuse involving an actor at Tbilisi's Rustaveli Theatre to "women starting 1937 [Soviet] repressions" on social media.
