Today Georgia marks the 30th anniversary of the creation of its armed forces.
The day is generally marked on April 30. However, due to Red Friday tomorrow, which is a day-off, the day was marked today.
The National Guard was established according to a resolution of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia in December 1990.
On April 24, 1991, Georgia’s Cabinet Ministers issued a decree to recruit the country’s youth for compulsory military service, and conscription into the army officially launched on April 30 of that year.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has stated earlier today that the Georgian armed forces are a ‘key guarantor’ of the state sovereignty and independence.
He stated that Georgian soldiers have contributed much to international peace and security and they are leaving the NATO Resolute Support Mission ‘with heads up and proudly.’
We will continue contributing to international peace in the future,” Garibashvili said.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has stated that the country has a ‘high-class armed forces.’
The Georgian armed forces are united and apolitical,” Zurabishvili said.
She stated that the country’s two major goals now are deoccupation of its territories and Euro-Atlantic integration.
