The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is helping Georgia to adopt legislation on environmental liability that will hold private companies accountable for pollution and other environmental harm, announces the UNDP Georgia.
Five by-laws designed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture with UNDP support will fill in gaps in the Law on Environmental Liability, adopted by the parliament in March and expected to come into force in 2022.
The UNDP and the Ministry of Environment signed an agreement on 13 April, committing to working with the government of Georgia and the private sector to finalise the legislation.
In addition, the UNDP will help raise environmental awareness across Georgian society and expand environmental education to secondary schools.
