New United States Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said in a video released yesterday that Georgia “is an important partner” for the US.

Kelly Degnan, who officially assumed her duties on January 31, said she, as an ambassador, is committed to keeping the US-Georgia ties strong as well as looking for new areas of bilateral cooperation.

For almost 30 years the US has been standing proudly with the people of Georgia. We’ve helped Georgia develop its democratic institutions and its rule of law, its economy and its security systems”, Ambassador Degnan said.

She also added that the US helps Georgia improve its education and healthcare systems “as important ways to raise the quality of life for all Georgians”.

In her address, Ambassador Degnan also underscored that "there is much more to be done" this election year to ensure "the truly free and fair" elections in October.

She also noted that Georgia is “highly respected” by the US military for its contributions to the international security and its commitment to “strengthening its ability to defend its borders”.

It is truly an honour to lead the US Embassy team as we work with our Georgian friends towards a prosperous, peaceful Georgia. Americans and Georgians have so much in common”, Ambassador Degnan said, confident that “our friendship will continue long in the future.

Kelly Degnan, who was nominated for the role by US President Donald Trump and approved by the US Senate, was sworn in back in mid-January.

The post of the US Ambassador to Georgia has been vacant since March 2018 after Ian Kelly announced his retirement when his mission in Georgia concluded.
