2019 data: majority of researchers in Georgia are women

The number of employees in research and development (R&D) equalled 13,732 last year in Georgia, of which 10,191 were researchers and 52.4 per cent of them were women, says a survey in research and development in scientific institutions in 2019 published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
Geostat said that 71.4 per cent of researchers have a doctoral or equivalent degree, 26.7 per cent have a master’s or equivalent degree and 1.8 per cent have a bachelor’s or equivalent.
As for the distribution of researchers by age, the highest rate in both women and men comes in age groups of 65 and older.
Overall, research and development in Georgia was conducted by 48 institutions in 2019, whose total expenditures on R&D equalled 140.2 million GEL.
Natural science, social sciences and humanities and technology are the fields of science on which the majority of researchers in Georgia worked last year.
The majority of researchers work in natural sciences and their total number amounts to 2,398, while others work in agricultural and veterinary fields, where about 442 persons are employed, said Geostat.
