UPDATED: Rescuers find one more dead body in Khelvachauri landslide, 16-year-old boy still missing

Rescuers have found one more dead body in the aftermath of a landslide in the village of Jocho, Khelvachauri municipality of western Adjara region.

More than 120 rescuers are still trying to find a 16-year-old boy who was in his house with his family members when the landslide hit the area yesterday.

The dead bodies of the 16-year-old boy’s mother and father have already been found in the landslide, reports the press office of the Emergency Management Service.

Relatives of the deceased individuals told Rustavi 2 that before the disaster the family had several times appealed to the local government for help, as they knew they were living in a hazard zone.

Head of the Adjara region government Tornike Rijvadze told Rustavi 2 that ‘an internal investigation is underway regarding the issue and those who showed indifference to the family will be severely punished’.

Rescuers have found the bodies of two individuals and a car which went missing yesterday in the village of Jocho, Khelvachauri municipality of western Adjara region.

About 120 rescuers are still trying to find three other individuals who also went missing yesterday after a landslide, which was caused by heavy rains in the area.

The Emergency Management Service reports that the search operation is also underway in the Satekhia river.

Rescuers managed to pull a vehicle out of the river, though they could not find its driver. Search operations are still underway”, says the press office of the Emergency Management Service.

The Public Security Management Centre received up to 440 messages due to the heavy rain in the Adjara region.

As a result of the heavy rain, streets, ground floors of houses, yards and basements have been flooded in the region. A mass of land has fallen in several places.

120 rescuers are trying to find at least five individuals who went missing yesterday in the village of Jocho, Khelvachauri municipality of western Adjara region, after heavy rain and a landslide hit the area. 

One house and a car have been swept away, reportedly with five individuals in it.

50 more rescuers are joining the operations soon, the Georgian Emergency Management Service has reported.
