Subsistence farmers will no longer be recorded as self-employed by the National Statistics Office of Georgia.

As of today, about 49-50 per cent of employed people in Georgia are self-employed,” said the director of the office, Gogita Todradze.

He added that 840,000 people are self-employed, of which 75 per cent are engaged in agricultural activities.

Out of self-employed people who are engaged in agricultural activities, 70-80 per cent are subsistence farmers which are no longer considered self-employed, thus they will be deducted from the employed category,” said Gogita Todradze.

However, these farmers will not be directly considered as unemployed as they should fulfill other criteria including but not limited to seeking a job and readiness to work.

Todradze says that the National Statistics Office of Georgia has started conducting new surveys since January of this year based on which it collects unemployment data from 6,400 households.
