US commends progress made in Georgian judiciary, urges dialogue on election reform

The US has commended the ‘recent progress’ made in the fourth wave of judicial reforms in Georgia and supported the ongoing dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition on electoral reform, the US Department of State says.
The United States supports a secure, prosperous, and democratic Georgia,” the statement says.
The US has urged the Georgian government to “reinforce its commitment” to the principles of democracy, individual liberty, and rule of law by ensuring that its judicial and prosecutorial system is free of political bias.

The statement reads that the US will continue to work with its “strategic partner Georgia” to promote the rule of law and accountable institutions.
51% of the Georgian population is satisfied with the level of the independence of the judiciary.
The US Embassy to Georgia and the European Union delegation to the country say that they welcome the final bill on the “fourth wave” of judicial reform in Georgia, which has been made as a result of a broad consensus in a working group composed of different players, including the international community, civil society and the judicial sector.
Over 3,000 juveniles have benefited from juvenile justice reforms which have been carried out in Georgia through the joint efforts of the Georgian Justice Ministry, the EU and UNICEF since 2010.
The judicial system of Georgia has the opportunity to be independent which is an integral part of any healthy democratic system, says the United States Embassy in Georgia.
