Georgian Vice Parliament Speaker Tamar Chugoshvili has stated that the US Congress has made several, vitally important decisions for Georgia.

Participating in a discussion at the George Washington Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, Chugoshvili mentioned a bill adopted by Congress in 2017 which bans US support for states which have recognised or  will recognise the Georgian occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent republics.

Chugoshvili also spoke about the recently adopted supportive act by the House of Representatives of the US Congress, which provides sanctions against individuals who have violated the rights of Georgian citizens in the occupied regions since 1991.

Russia is trying to isolate the Georgian occupied regions through the erection of new barriers and the closure of so-called borders,” Chugoshvili said.

Chugoshvili expressed hope that very soon Venezuela will join the countries which recognise the territorial integrity of Georgia.

Only Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria have recognised the Georgian occupied regions as independent republics since the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
