Research and development in Georgia was conducted by 56 institutions in 2018, including 47 higher education institutions, show data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
Total expenditure in research and development was 128.3 million GEL ($43.2 mln/€39.3 mln).
The number of total employees in research and development came out to 15,522, of which 11,174 were researchers.
The share of women in researchers was 53 per cent, while men accounted for 47 per cent.
The majority of researchers had doctoral or equivalent degrees (65.6 per cent) in 2018, while the share of researchers with master’s or equivalent degree was 30.1 per cent. The remaining researchers have bachelors degrees.
The majority of female researchers were in between the ages of 45-54 in 2018, while most of the male researchers were older than 65 years old.
