35 medications for 1 GEL: gov’t offers medications at symbolic price to pensioners, people with disabilities

Pensioners, persons with disabilities and other groups in Georgia will be able to buy 35 medications for 1 GEL to treat six kinds of chronic diseases, announced Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze today.
These chronic diseases include cardiovascular, thyroid gland, lung, diabetes, epilepsy and parkinson's diseases.

Bakhtadze said that the government strives to ease the public’s medication-related expenses.
Today we are making amendments in the programme for providing medicine for chronic diseases. Starting today, together with the socially vulnerable people, all groups including pensioners, persons with disabilities and other groups [the list will be specified later] will be able to purchase medicines for 1 GEL”, said Bakhtadze.
Bakhtadze promised the public to do his best to minimise the cost of medicines for vulnerable people in Georgia.
Georgia will purchase double amount of anti-flu vaccines for 2019-2020 and this will be 80,000 vaccines instead of the 41,000 which were purchased for 2018-2019, head of the National Disease Control Centre Amiran Gamkrelidze has told Netgazeti.
Four pharmacy chains have received an additional supply of anti-flu medicine Tamiflu, totalling 800 packages from the Ministry of Health.
The socially vulnerable population of Georgia and people with disabilities will soon be able to buy more medicines at a symbolic or halved price starting next year, with medicines for epilepsy and Parkinson’s being added to the list.

Starting today, pensioners, persons with disabilities and other groups in Georgia will be able to buy 35 medications for 1 GEL at 118 pharmacies across the country to treat six kinds of chronic diseases.
Leaders and members of the non-parliamentary Free Georgia opposition party may face criminal charges as the State Audit Office is looking into the party’s cheap medicine campaign which offers medicines bought by the party in Turkey to Georgian citizens at a lower price than they cost at Georgian pharmacies.
Acting Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has announced that socially vulnerable pensioners will receive 500 GEL vouchers to purchase various prescribed medications. At the municipal government session held earlier today, Kaladze said the new program will cost 20 million GEL and have 40,000 beneficiaries.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said the government will ‘actively negotiate’ with pharmaceutical industry representatives in order to regulate medication prices. During a meeting earlier today with Georgian National Competition Agency head Irakli Lekvinadze, Garibashvili discussed an interim report on pharmaceutical market monitoring, asserting that the public is ‘very concerned’ about drug prices, and that regulatory measures need to become more ‘transparent.’
