Many inpatient care facilities are ineffective at preventing infections in their institutions, a new report from the State Audit Service of Georgia shows.

Eleven of 299 inpatient care facilities were included in the monitoring programme conducted from 2015-2017.

The study showed that 51% of reported infections were acquired by patients in the 11 inpatient care facilities.

The other 49% of cases were reported by 288 inpatient care facilities not involved in the monitoring programme.

The State Audit Report says the data provided by the other 288 facilities is likely incomplete.

Per the report a total of 518 cases of hospital-acquired infections were confirmed across the country in 2015-2017.

A hospital-acquired infection is considered an infection obtained within 48 hours after a person is admitted to an inpatient care facility.
