5th grave found in Batumi possibly with remains of people shot during Stalin’s reign

Another grave has been uncovered in Batumi, in western Georgia, which is very likely to house the remains of victims of Soviet repression in 1937-1938 during Stalin’s reign.

The announcement was made today during the meeting of the governmental commission which was tasked to study the four graves and remains found there earlier in April, on Pridon Khalvashi street in Batumi.

One more grave has been found. We have not touched it. We are waiting for specialists,” local cleric Pirimze Rurua told the media.

The bodies of over 150 people were found in the four graves.

In 1937-1938, more than 3,600 people were executed by on order of members of the Politburo and Stalin himself.

About 3,100 of them were condemned to execution by shooting. Sentences were executed in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi and Sokhumi.
