Eight architecture projects from Georgia will vie to claim the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture next spring, after buildings from performance venues to hotels to marketplaces in the country were shortlisted by judges for the renowned award.
The projects, ranging from Fabrika Tbilisi, a hospitality and creative spot in a former Soviet sewing factory, to Black Sea Arena, a brand-new venue hosting top artists on Georgia’s seaside, were picked among 383 works nominated for the Prize.
Also known as the Mies van der Rohe Award — named after a major figure of modernist architecture — the honour is designed to honour “excellence in European architecture in conceptual, social, cultural, technical and constructive terms”.
It also works to “highlight the European city as a model for the sustainably smart city”, said a description from organisers.

This year’s nominees have been picked from 238 cities in nearly 40 countries by 76 experts as well as national architecture associations and the Prize Advisory Committee.
Awarded by the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, winners for the Prize will be revealed in May 2019, after juries of the Prize visit finalists selected from the nominees.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona and will be accompanied by an exhibition, lectures and debates.
The Prize for Contemporary Architecture is awarded since 1988, and is recognised as the official EU architecture prize since 2001.
