Georgian freestyle wrestler wins world championship for the second time

Georgian freestyle wrestler Geno Tetriashvili, 24, won the world championship for the second time yesterday in Budapest.

In the final fight he defeated Chinese Zhiwei Deng.

My victory is for my country and for our fallen heroes,” said Petriashvili, who is from Georgia’s Gori region, which was bombed by Russians during the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.

The United World Wrestling (UWW), the international governing body for the sport, named Petriashvili 2016 Best Freestyle Athlete.

Together with the title of the best freestyle wrestler, UWW President Nenad Lalovic awarded Petriashvili with $10,000 USD.

Petriashvili  won the gold medal at the Wrestling World Championship that took place in the French capital of Paris in August 2017 .

Petriashvili is  a two-time world bronze medalist and a bronze medal winner at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Petriashvili won European title in 2016 as well as two bronze medals at the European championships in 2013 and 2017. He won a bronze medal at the European Games in 2015.
