A total of 16,967 foreign citizens were working in Georgia in January-June 2018, local media outlet BPN reports based on information provided by the Georgian Revenue Service.
Meanwhile in 2017, 22,718 foreigners worked in the country.
Georgia’s Ministry of Economy conducted a special study in 2017, to find out in which sectors are foreign citizens employed in Georgia.
The survey showed that foreign citizens are mainly employed in economic sectors, such as:
- Construction - 5,560 employees (31.6 percent of total employment for foreign nationals)
- Wholesale and retail trade - 4,757 employees (27 percent)
- Transportation and warehousing - 13,866 employees (7.9 percent)
- Administrative and support services - 1,260 (7.2 percent)
- Tourism - 1,231 (7 percent)
The least number of foreigners are employed in healthcare and social services - 466 (2.7 percent), art, entertainment and recreation - 350 (two percent) and agricultural enterprises - 189 (1.1 percent), shows statistics.
Georgian businesses employed about 637,000 people in the first quarter (Q1) of 2018, of which 40.6 percent were women and 59.4 percent were men.
Almost 22 percent of Georgia’s population is under the absolute poverty line, shows the latest data of 2017 poverty indicators published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
But men earn more than women
The average monthly salary in Georgia was 1,069.1 GEL (about $418.40/€355.01*) in the third quarter (Q3) of 2017, shows the latest data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
About 20.1 per cent of Georgia’s population is under the absolute poverty line, shows the latest data of 2018 poverty indicators published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat). Most people under absolute the poverty line live in the country’s rural areas.

The share of the population under the absolute poverty line decreased by 0.6 per cent in 2019 compared to 2018.
