The Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili posthumously awarded 27-year-old Georgian miner Sandro Butskhrikidze, who used to spend all his income on charity.

Margvelashvili arrived in the Tkibuli region in the country’s west today to meet with Butskhrikidze’s family members and hand over the Saint Nicholas’ state order to them, which is given to those who unselfishly help people and who are engaged in charity.

I have come here to share your pain and to thank you for bringing up such a man. You should be proud of him.  Your son did not have much income, but he was a philanthropist,” Margvelashvili said.

Locals say that Sandro's death is a huge tragedy. Photo: netgazeti.ge.

Butskhrikidze died on June 2 with 65-year-old Rezo Lomtadze in a mine, allegedly due to a lack of air.

Locals say that the young man worked in the mine to help  poor people.

Butskhrikidze also worked for the Red Cross local organization free of charge and brought meals to people unable to walk.

Butskhrikidze loved theater and played for a local theatre as well.
