Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili met with human rights expert Maggie Nicholson who has prepared a progress report on the implementation of Georgia’s Human Rights Strategy 2014-2020.

How successful is Georgia in implementing its Human Rights Strategy 2014-2020?

To answer this question an independent report Implementation of Georgia’s Human Rights Strategy: Main Findings and Future Approaches was presented to representatives of the Georgian Government, civil society and international organisations yesterday.

Welcoming the significant progress made in almost all subject areas addressed in the national strategy, the report also makes specific recommendations in relation to justice, the penitentiary system, the prevention of torture and ill-treatment, the right to privacy, freedom of expression, assembly and demonstration, minority rights, rights of the child, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, migrants, gender equality and the right to work.

Thanking Nicholson for her report, Kvirikashvili said the country continues reforms in human rights protection, democratic development and the rule of law.

The report was prepared by the international expert Nicholson with assistance from the U.S. Government through USAID’s Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG) activity, which is implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

It is in line with EWMI/PROLoG’s efforts to assist with establishing a system of continuous human rights reform in Georgia and the U.S. Government’s efforts to strengthen democratic principles in Georgia.
