Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met with US President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn, yesterday during his two-day official state visit to the US.

The pair discussed the nature of Georgian-American relations, the Charter on Strategic Partnership and the future of relations between the two countries.

Signed in Washington, DC on January 9, 2009, the United States-Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership is the "central framework for the bilateral relationship of the United States and Georgia” and expresses a "mutual desire to strengthen [the] relationship across economic, energy, diplomatic, scientific, cultural and security fields.”

Janelidze commented on the state of Georgian-American affairs, saying that "our relations with the US are in a very active phase and our strategic partnership is developing in all directions defined under the Charter [on Strategic Partnership] and [our] bilateral agenda”.

Flynn emphasised Georgia’s important contributions to the Euro-Atlantic security process, stressing that as concerns international challenges and security, Georgia is not only an important partner for the US in the region, but globally as well.

Flynn praised the mutually-pleasing nature of current reforms in Georgia for both the US administration and the Georgian government.

The US President’s adviser further stated that Georgia is exemplary in the region for its democratic and economic developments and has huge potential to turn into a regional economic hub.

Within his two-day working visit to the US, Minister Janelidze has also scheduled a meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as well as Senators and Congressmen.
