Georgia has imposed a moratorium from today on foreign citizens obtaining property rights on agricultural lands.

The Ministry of Justice of Georgia said the moratorium will remain in place until the constitutional change banning Georgia’s agricultural lands to be sold to foreign nationals comes into force.

During the moratorium, foreign nationals will not be allowed to register their property rights on agricultural lands on Georgian territory.

"The moratorium does not cover cases when a foreign national has already registered their property rights. In such cases the agricultural lands remain in their ownership,” the Ministry said.

Under Georgia’s draft revised constitution, agricultural lands cannot be sold to:

  • Foreign citizens;
  • Foreign-registered companies;
  • Companies registered by a foreign national in Georgia.
